Fishermen discard the nets when they get badly damaged.

If there are only small wear and tear, they repair.

But if the damage is big, they abandon the nets all around.

Their material is predominantly non-biodegradable nylon.

Disposing such nets is a concern for Khushi Parisara that have tried to outreach local fishermen about its dangers. They were invited to rather give them to gujri instead of dumping them everywhere, thus making it possible to be recycled.

But without a marine trash policy, without rules and regulations for it, the fishermen contribution for the dramatic issue of ghost nets for marine life, remains a crucial issue to be tackled by Fisheries, Ports and all concerned Civic Bodies.
